Zenobia

Zenobia (3rd century CE) was the queen of Palmyra, an oasis city in what is now Syria. Zenobia was well known for her intellect, ability to speak many languages, and strategic mind. She married Odaenathus, the ruler of Palmyra. Odaenathus was instrumental in defending Roman territories against Persian invasions. When he was assassinated in 267 AD, Zenobia assumed throne for her young son. Seizing the opportunity presented by Rome's weakened state, she lead an ambitious campaign to seize control of neighboring regions. By 270 AD, she had expanded her domain to include Egypt and parts of Anatolia, establishing the Palmyrene Empire.

Zenobia was attempting to position Palmyra as an equal to Rome. She adopted imperial titles, minted coins bearing her image, and promoted cultural and intellectual achievements. Her court began attracting scholars and artists turning it into a center of culture and learning.

It did not take Rome long to notice her success. Emperor Aurelian, determined to restore Roman to its glory, led a military campaign against Zenobia in 272 AD. It was not long until Palmyra was besieged. Historical accounts tell us Zenobia attempted to flee to Persia but was captured. Historical records tell us that Zenobia was paraded through Rome as a symbol of Rome's victory. What happened to her after that is unknown, some accounts say she was executed while others say that she was exiled.
