Hedy Lamarr

In honor of my uncle’s birthday lets talk about his celebrity crush, Hedy Lamarr. Hedy is often referred to as the “Most beautiful woman in the world”, she was stunning, during WWII men had her picture hanging in their footlockers (my uncle has his hanging in by the fridge in the barn now). Hedy was born in Vienna, Austria on November 9, 1914; her parents named her Hedwig Kiesler. According to sources Hedy was a very curious child who enjoyed taking things about to figure out how they worked. Her mother, a pianist, encouraged her to explore the world of art. AS a young teen Hedy found and fell in love with acting, landing roles on stage and film.

In 1933 she met and married Friedrich Mandl a wealthy gun manufacturer. Her marriage to Mandl restricted her ability to act and after a few years she fled her marriage and Austria running away to London. In London she met and auditioned for Louis B Mayer who was there looking for new talent. Shortly after arriving in the US she was starring in movies.

But… thats not why you should care. Hedy was brilliant, She never lost the love for tinkering and inventing. Hedy created the wing design for Howard Hughes airplane, invented a pill that dissolved in water to make it taste like soda, more importantly she invented frequency hoping the foundation for Wi-Fi and GPS technology.
